2022 Toyota Tacoma is not only a supporter of the mid-truck segment but also the off-road community. For decades it has offered competent buyers a canvas for countless off-road upgrades, and Toyota continues to offer more aggressive off-road options to the Tacoma lineup.
For 2022, Toyota has given the relatively new Trail Edition some aesthetic as well as mechanical changes, while the highly capable TRD Pro goes even further with a unique suspension section.
Introduced last year, the Trail Edition is a limited production model based on the budget trim level of the SR5 and features several off-road and practical goodies, such as a lockable sleeping box.
For 2022, Toyota has standardized equipment with a rear locking differential and less suspension lift (1.1 inches of lift at the front and 0.5 inches at the rear) compared to other Tacomas to give the truck a little extra power and clearance off-road.
It also borrows the legacy grille from the TRD Pro and adds bronze lettering. And, hey, do you like trendy bronze-colored wheels? It’s there too. As for the TRD Pro, it gets a slightly higher suspension lift than the Trail Edition (1.5 inches up front but still 0.5 inches behind) plus a new wheel and tire setup.
We appreciate this truck, but there’s also good reason to go for a sturdy Chevrolet Colorado, a sturdy Jeep Gladiator, or a revamped Honda Ridgeline.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Review
The Toyota Tacoma 2022 is great for work tasks and fantastic for off-roading, but it’s a small interior and less polished driving style than most other midsize pickups.
While it’s the only one still offering a manual transmission, its weak four-cylinder and 270-hp V-6 provide excellent performance; the six-speed automatic is optional but not overly refined.
At least Tacoma is backed by Toyota’s tiered reliability, and the off-road optimized model is very capable. It thrives on mud and trails, with flexible suspension and rugged equipment that has helped maintain its reputation alongside legends like the Jeep Wrangler and now its pickup partner, the Gladiator.
The 2022 Tacoma isn’t as customizable as the Jeeps, and it doesn’t drive as well as the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, but the Taco is tough and packed with standard driver-assist technology.
A taller raised Tacoma model for the 2022 model year. The Trail Edition and TRD Pro both now sit half an inch taller at the back and 1.1 and 1.5 inches taller, respectively, at the front.
The height advantage gives each truck a better approach, break over, and angle of departure that makes crawling over uneven terrain easier than ever.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign
When Tacoma was redesigned in 2016, we wanted to know what it was like to live together, so we bought it. Specifically, we purchased a 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and used it in our long-term fleet for nearly two years, putting over 40,000 miles on the odometer.
The Tacoma has received several updates since its redesign in 2016, but it’s the same generation truck so most of our observations hold.
The Tacoma steers and handles smoothly and is generally easy to ride. The main exception is the brakes, which feel dim and can cause a sharp dip during sudden stops.
We expect the 3.5-liter V6 to feel a little more powerful, but there’s enough power for everyday use. Transmission shifts are predictable and able to maximize the engine.
Off-roading is where the Tacoma shines and stands above all but the Gladiators.
The Tacoma has the clearance, gear, and traction to tackle serious terrain, and the brakes and throttle are proven to be very precise and controllable in low-distance crawl situations.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Interior
Sticking to your roots is commendable, but it doesn’t benefit the Tacoma cabin. The utilitarian layout and materials are from a different era. Higher trim levels rely heavily on hard plastics and minimalistic materials.
However, Tacoma is finally offering a power-adjustable driver’s seat. However, cramped spaces are a staple of Tacoma. The back seat of the crew cabin is where passengers on the Tacoma have to squeeze, as legroom is very tight.
The Tacoma has more than enough volume in its five-foot or six-foot bed but disappoints with a bit of storage space and limited carry space inside.
Storage capacity is limited inside the Tacoma, and the crew cabin we tested was only able to accommodate nine pieces of luggage in the back seat. Apart from the center console bay, there isn’t much usable storage space or cubes.
touchscreen infotainment in every Tacoma. The base model has a 7.0-inch screen, and all other trim levels have an 8.0-inch screen. The company has also finally added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, which should improve the user experience over previous infotainment systems.
While multiple USB ports and wireless charging are available, Tacoma still doesn’t offer a mobile hotspot like some of its competitors do.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Tacoma’s optional V-6 engine provides decent performance and towing muscle, but the base four-cylinder is underpowered and best avoided. We also recommend avoiding the tough six-speed automatic with either engine—sticking to the six-speed manual and the V-6.
Anchored by automatic, larger machines struggle at times. The TRD Sport and Limited models are oriented towards city driving, while the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions look for rougher roads.
However, neither of these options is very fast. Far from being the first choice for ride quality and handling, the Tacoma can tackle rough trails or back roads with ease.
These can be equipped to take advantage of opportunities to hit the ground or roam the pavement. The Limited delivers a satisfying ride that’s smoother and quieter than the off-road version.
We’ve driven the Tacoma TRD Pro west and found its raised suspension, stocky shock absorbers, and rugged tires make it one of the best trucks for off-roading but less fun to drive daily.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Towing and Payload Capacity
At its boldest, the Tacoma can pull up to 6800 pounds with rear-wheel drive; the four-wheel drive version can pull 6500 pounds.
Tacoma’s maximum payload capacity of 1685 pounds is only available on two-wheel-drive models with four-cylinder engines, with four-wheel-drive and V-6 engines yielding significantly lower capabilities.
2022 Toyota Tacoma MPG
The EPA-rated V-6 Tacoma’s fuel economy ranks midway, but in our real-world highway testing it lost out to more efficient competitors.
While the manual transmission with the V-6 has the worst fuel economy, it’s a lot more fun to drive. In our real-world fuel economy test, the Tacoma matched the EPA highway estimate of 23 mpg.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Price
We recommend the TRD Off-Road Crew Cab (aka Double Cab) for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma. It comes standard with an electronically locked rear differential, and we’ll take ours with the optional four-wheel drive.
We will continue the wheezing base four-cylinder engine and upgrade to the more powerful V-6 option. While not opting for an automatic transmission means missing out on certain options, we prefer to shift gears ourselves and avoid the car’s clunky behavior.
This decision limited us to the shorter 5.0-foot cargo box, because—for whatever reason—the manual wasn’t compatible with Tacos equipped with a 6.0-foot bed. Likewise, the Premium plan is not offered with our transmission options.
However, each model has 16-inch wheels, black over-fenders, plenty of driver assistance, and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot.
We’ll also opt for the Technology package with options, which features enhanced front lighting with LED elements as well as blind spot monitoring, rear traffic warning, and parking sensors.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Release Date
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma will go on sale in the fall of 2021.

Tacoma takes a step to the solid side on TRD Pro and Off-Road trims, which feature exclusive wheels and protruding tires to tackle off-road terrain. We expect this to remain the same in Tacoma 2022.
Next year Toyota will come with rear drum brakes not one of those reasons, but the record of reliability and resale value supports Taco more than all competitors.
Toyota has a comfortable advantage over the Big Three in Detroit and other rivals so Tacoma is also one of the more expensive trucks in the segment for $ 26,050 excluding destination costs.
Even premium-oriented GMC Canyon doesn’t cost much, but Toyota wants to make Taco more profitable in terms of production costs. To achieve this goal, Toyota Texas will end production of Tacoma in late 2021 to welcome the new Sequoia in 2022 and additional output for a full-size Tundra pickup.
As a result of this decision, Taco moved to Mexico. Donald Trump was unhappy when Toyota tried to do the same thing with Corolla in 2017, and finally, the company changed its plans to produce Corolla in a jointly operated factory in Alabama.

Toyota Tacoma Diesel 2022 fans don’t want to be cheated anymore. Rumors of diesel-engined trucks coming to America have been circulating for years. However, the Toyota Tacoma diesel could be happening in the United States this time.
According to The Drive, Toyota filed a US patent describing a high-compression engine that could run on diesel fuel. It could be Tundra or Tacoma, or maybe both. Then both trucks will benefit from increased fuel economy and greater torque.
The patent covers several potential benefits of high compression technology, including reduced smoke and improved ignition. Since smoke can be a problem for traditional diesel engines, it makes sense.
Fumes and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are removed by modern diesel trucks with diesel particulate filters (PDF) and diesel exhaust (DEF). Machines that can reduce smoke without requiring DEF will change the game.
Speculation from Pickup Trucks suggests that the Taco diesel will resemble its international cousin, the Toyota Hilux. If this information is correct, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma diesel might be available with a 2.8-liter turbo option that puts out 177 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Sources say that the Toyota Tacoma can add a turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the mix. This could be the answer for the new, more powerful Frontier V6.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid
Oh yeah, rumors about a new Toyota Tacoma hybrid truck are also circulating. The diesel engine seems to be in the opposite direction to the hybrid engine. But both options should help reduce our carbon footprint.
For example, the Toyota Hilux was discontinued in the United States because it failed to meet rising emission standards. Now with a modern update, perhaps Toyota will see the value in the availability of this new engine option.
If we switch gears and visit Tacoma World, we can find more speculation. According to the comments, Toyota is building a new single platform for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and Tundra to use. A hybrid powertrain could be part of this plan.
