2022 Toyota Tundra Seeing the current Toyota Tundra impressed us enough to get the MotorTrend Truck of the Year award… in 2008. Since then, the Japanese automaker has only applied a lipstick finish to its aging pickups, while rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, and Ram 1500 received at least one complete redesign. In other words, the Tundra has been left in the dust. However, Toyota finally did something.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra will use the chassis of the company’s newest truck. Reportedly as the Toyota New Global Architecture-F (or TNGA-F), the Tundra’s body-on-frame foundation should benefit from the use of high-strength steel and other weight-saving materials. Like the Ram 1500, we anticipate the next-generation Tundra will adopt coil springs – replacing current truck leaf springs – to use its active rear axle.
Such an arrangement will definitely improve the driving quality of the truck. Likewise, we estimate the Tundra 2022 will increase the model’s output maximum payload of 1,730 pounds and a towing figure of 10,200 pounds. Also known as the TNGA-F, the chassis of the Tundra 2022 ladder frame was not designed with an eight-cylinder factory in mind. At most, you can look forward to six-cylinder, forced induction, and hybrid assistance for a full-size pickup.
Not long ago, an “inside source” revealed that the Tundra will get a 3.5-liter engine from the Lexus LS 500 combined with a lithium-ion battery and a Lexus LS 500h electric motor. Confidential information also says that 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet are doable, along with 30-plus MPG.
Until Toyota is clear about such an F1-based model as a half-ton workhorse, the Russian automotive publication Kolesa has treated us with speculative renderings of the next-generation truck. The bling-bling grille flanked by small headlights is complemented by a large Ram-style hood, side profiles more American than ever before, and a rear door with a beautifully minimalist design.
Even the rear bumper has been built with usability in mind, and the bedside accent lines and front fenders add to the truck’s visual appeal. Whatever the future holds when it comes to exterior design, Toyota will have to build a case at a lower starting price.
Without entry-level retail customers and deep pockets of fleet operators, sales numbers would never have increased with so many competitors fighting over the same pool of potential buyers.
As a quick refresher, Tundra finished 2019 with 111,673 sales in the United States. The Ford F-Series moved 896,526 units, the Ram was second with 633,694 trucks, and the Chevy Silverado sold 575,569 units.

We haven’t heard or seen much about the next generation Tundra in a few months. Toyota is generally very good at keeping their new vehicle secret before the company is ready to make an official announcement. This is the same case with the new Tundra.
The prototype you see here appears to have the same cabin as the current generation Tundra. The front and rear of the prototype are camouflaged. Does this mean that the next generation of trucks will continue to use the same crew cabin construction? This is not possible.
This appears to be an old prototype truck very similar to the one we saw about a year ago. Looks like it’s testing the latest version of the powertrain.
What’s under the hood? Will the 5.7L V8 stay? There’s no official information on this yet, but all the rumors point to a new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 in the next Tundra. Toyota and Lexus have used this turbocharged engine.
The current Lexus LS engine produces 416 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque in RWD orientation. The new Ford F-150 2021 features an updated 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. If Toyota was to seriously compete, the Tundra would have to be close to this power output and have similar payload and crane capabilities.
The 2021 Ford F-150 has the capability to tow up to 14,000 lbs. The next Tundra may not need to be that tall at maximum crane ratings, but it will need to be between 12,000-13,000 lbs to compete with Ford, GM, Ram, and Nissan.
2022 Toyota Tundra Design
Turning to the design side despite its relatively radical mechanical changes, the Toyota Tundra 2022 is expected to evolve to follow today’s truck styles. That’s not a bad thing, as the current Tundra has finally grown into its skin – the original looked like a four-wheeled fish – and came across as quite harmless, if not completely handsome.
However, look for a big Toyota truck with a brasher front-end design that combines a large grille and a tall hood, giving the new Tundra a more flashy mug.
Inside, the new Tundra will welcome the latest Toyota Entune infotainment technology. This includes the available 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a large head-up display unit.
A full range of Toyota’s Safety Sense kit will be available as well, including automatic braking, advanced cruise control radar, automatic lane centering and lane guard assistance, and more.
2022 Toyota Tundra Engine
As for the engine say goodbye to the Tundra’s V-8 engine, as Toyota’s big pickup is rumored to be entering the world with a V-6 powertrain line only. Look for the high-end Tundra variant to take advantage of the 3.4 liters 416 hp unit variant found under the hood of the Lexus LS500.
The Lesser Tundras will likely use the naturally aspirated 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine from Tacoma (probably massaged to make over 300 horses).
Given Toyota’s hybrid history, the brand may offer the Tundra 2022 with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain option, placing it at the forefront of a segment that is just heating to electrification. Such an arrangement would allow Toyota trucks to compete well with the Ford F-150 2021 and available hybrid powertrains.

Here’s the interesting part although we expect Toyota to launch the Tundra 2022 before the middle of next year, we don’t anticipate the model will launch from the Toyota plant in San Antonio, Texas, and reach dealerships until the end of 2021.
