2023 Toyota Prius: The New Luxurious Prius Hybrid Compact Car Review

Posted on

2023 Toyota Prius The Toyota Prius has historically been the standard bearer for the hybrid movement, which may be approaching a crossroads as electric vehicles gain momentum. The Prius continues to lead the hybrid field in fuel economy, despite underperforming and mediocre infotainment.

But it seems although this is unconfirmed, that Toyota will release a redesigned Prius for the 2023 model year to address some of the issues that allowed competitors like the Honda Insight and Kia Niro to close the gap.

Meanwhile, the current Prius still has one thing many buyers care about: great mileage. And to be fair, today’s Prius does accelerate responsively around town, which is more than can be said for its predecessor. We’re not going to try to persuade you to buy a Prius right now, in other words.

But if you don’t mind waiting, it will be interesting to see what will happen in 2023. Can the Prius reassert itself in a market where it seems that everyone wants an SUV? We’ll keep you updated as new details come out.

After years of criticism about its design, the Toyota Prius can finally get a makeover. At least, that’s our hope for the Toyota Prius 2023, an affordable hybrid hatchback that will be updated. Here’s what we expect for the Prius 2023.

Is there a new Prius coming? Experts are considering the possibility of a complete redesign of the Toyota Prius 2023 for the next model year. The last major overhaul of this popular little hybrid-electric hatchback was in 2016.

That means the current generation of Prius is getting old. Even though the Prius is the best hybrid car of 2022, that’s because of a facelift. Currently, there are no official Prius 2023 renderings or spy shots, but a redesign looks very likely.

Will there be a 5th generation Prius? Several sources, including Kelley Blue Book (KBB), are very confident about the arrival of a new generation of Prius in 2023. It is one of the best electric cars on the market for drivers on a budget. A new design can transform this iconic, yet underpowered and lightweight, from boring to bold.

Toyota hasn’t given a release date for the Prius 2023 yet, but we expect to hear more soon. At this point in the year, the new model likely won’t arrive until spring 2023.

2023 New Toyota Prius Review

The Toyota Prius 2023 continues to be the darling of anyone looking for an efficient, spacious hybrid with excellent fuel economy and up to five onboard spaces. While the Prius isn’t known to get pulse racing for its wild speed and performance, this 4-door hatchback is affordable and easily gets over 50 mpg during city and highway driving.

2023 Toyota Prius New

We fully expect the Prius to enter a new generation with the start of the 2023 model year. While still popular, the Prius is starting to be overshadowed by full-electric or part-electric rivals — not to mention Toyota’s own RAV4 Hybrid SUV.

Of course, Toyota would be happy to offer buyers the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The latest models can travel on electric power alone for approximately 25 miles. The model was reviewed separately.

What should we expect to find in the new and improved Prius? The sportier and expressive exterior design is a good start, something that aligns with the bolder 2022 Prius Prime look. This will help differentiate the Prius from direct rivals, including the Hyundai Ioniq, and give it a more youthful appeal.

The powertrain will continue to consist of a small capacity 4-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor and battery. The fuel economy will improve slightly, perhaps up to over 60 mpg on the most efficient trims.

While the Prius’ cabin has always been roomy, the layout of the controls in the center of the dashboard — not to mention the tiny gear lever that sprouts from the dashboard — has been a hallmark of this fuel-sucking car since it first arrived some 20 years ago. many years ago. It remains to be seen how creative and futuristic Toyota will be with the interior design of the Prius 2023.

Standard features will continue to include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Wi-Fi hotspot, and a range of active safety features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and rain detection wipers.

2023 Toyota Prius Redesign

If this compact hybrid hatchback receives a full redesign, we can expect a number of changes to the Toyota Prius 2023. These changes will likely have a more significant impact on the exterior and cabin of the hybrid car than the specifications.

The specifications of the Toyota Prius 2023 will likely remain the same, with a few changes. The Corolla Hybrid and the classic Prius usually share the same powertrain, and the Corolla Hybrid 2023 carries the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Will the Prius continue with that engine, or will Toyota experiment with a more powerful hybrid engine?

The Toyota Prius 2023’s mpg rating hasn’t been released yet, but we can expect to see over 50 mpg in town.

2023 Toyota Prius Design

Seeing how Toyota has stepped up the Mirai’s styling in such a way, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Prius 2023 also gets some attention on the sheet metal front and back. The new wheel style is likely an update.

They’re all hybrids nowadays, but Toyota hasn’t forgotten the car that started it all. We’re talking about the Prius, which is slated to get a new generation in 2023.

Earlier today, the automaker hosted a major event in America, where it revealed everything from the TRD to previews of its exciting new electric vehicle. But information about the new Prius came all the way from Japan.

Local website Best Car Web states that work is underway on the next-gen model and that it should be out or launched in January 2023. That means it will take until the 2024 model year to reach dealers.

So why is Toyota simultaneously working on EVs and hybrids? Well, a recent video of the catalytic converter theft showed us just how popular the Prius is. This is especially true in California, where it is a huge element of the suburban landscape.

2023 Toyota Prius Interior

Performance aside, buyers are likely to be most attracted by the changes to the interior of the Toyota Prius 2023. While this comfortable and versatile hatchback offers the most real cargo space for its size, the cabin isn’t particularly appealing. KBB says that “the layout of the controls in the center of the dashboard—not to mention the tiny gear lever that sprouts from the dashboard—has been a hallmark of this fuel-sucking car since it first arrived some 20 years ago.”

“Quirk” is a good term. The Prius’ interior hasn’t had a major overhaul in a long time, and that’s long overdue.

On the outside, the Toyota Prius 2023 will likely offer the same or similar colors. However, it may add new colors to the Toyota Nightshade Special Edition package, such as the new Camry 2023.

2023 Toyota Prius Exterior

One of the main focuses of the Prius 2023 project is the sporty exterior. It will have thin lights and a body that looks more like a coupe than a family car. It sounds a bit strange, but Toyota is a global leader in this field, so they should know best.

2023 Toyota Prius Powertrain

The current generation is the 4th and debuted in 2015 during the Los Angeles Auto Show. It has already migrated to the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, which the 5th generation model will maintain.

The powertrain is said to consist of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a lithium-ion battery. However, we were told to expect major improvements in fuel efficiency.

The Prius isn’t that hot right now. That’s down from 236,000 units sold in 2012 to 43,000 for 2020. We believe the right move here is to make the Prius the leading EV in its class to stop losing market share.

Japanese automakers have a habit of killing famous models rather than reviving them. Hopefully, the Prius doesn’t have the same fate as the Celica or Acura Integra.

Apart from the Prius, our sources mention two more hot debuts. By the end of 2023, Toyota is also expected to have a Supra GRMN with more than 500 horsepower. Also, they believe the Corolla Sport GRMN specifications have been finalized. This hot hatch will reportedly have 296 hp (300 PS) from a 1.6-liter turbo 3-cylinder engine, as well as an AWD system.

Toyota Prius Hydrogen-Powered

Toyota will launch its all-new hydrogen-powered vehicles, the Corolla and Prius in 2023. Toyota has historically been ahead of other automakers when it comes to environmental friendliness but is one of the slower automakers in the electric vehicle scene.

Seems to take a different approach. Toyota has been pushing hydrogen as a viable carbon-neutral fuel. It has a planned heavy-duty truck fuel cell module assembly in Kentucky, as well as a Mirai fuel cell car.

It has offered a hybrid option on every vehicle in its lineup other than the GR86, GR Yaris, and Supra. Now advancing the development of hydrogen as a fuel source, the two most popular vehicles will be hydrogen-powered.

The fuel-efficient Toyota Prius is known as an environmentally friendly engine. The first mass-produced hybrid vehicle was the Prius in 1997 and over the years, it has become a model synonymous with never having to stop for refueling.

Although it still uses the same plug-in hybrid technology, by 2023 it will be powered by hydrogen. As a result, like the traditional Prius plug-in hybrid, it will have the benefit of running on batteries but using hydrogen instead of gasoline. The process is very different from the Mirai mentioned above.

Mirai uses the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in fuel cells to generate electricity to power its motors. The Prius and Corolla will operate like traditional vehicles, only replacing gasoline with hydrogen.

In 1966, Toyota started production of the Corolla and it is currently available in standard and hybrid models. However, like the Prius, it will come in a hydrogen-powered variant starting in 2023. Toyota recently competed in “The Fuji 24-Hours” race using a Corolla with a hydrogen-powered combustion engine in the Corolla hatchback.

The 1.6-liter turbo three-cylinder engine is converted to run entirely on hydrogen using the Denso injection system. This technology was pioneered using the Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell sedan.

The Corolla has four hydrogen tanks that can hold up to 180 liters, or 47,551 gallons. These tanks are behind the driver’s cockpit, surrounded by a carbon fiber crash structure. This race helped fuel the desire to release a hydrogen-powered Corolla in 2023 alongside the Prius.

With the auto industry soaring into the electric vehicle market, it seems strange for Toyota to move in a different direction. Toyota’s main goal with hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles is to reduce emissions.

According to Forbes, in 2019 a Toyota spokesman said the auto giant was capable of producing 28,000 electric cars per year vs 1.5 million hybrid cars. Hybrids are therefore a priority as 1.5 million sales of hybrids per year reduce carbon emissions by a third over 28,000 electric vehicle sales. Toyota’s goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The automaker announced the production of its first fully electric vehicle concept, the “bZ4X”, in April 2021.

Toyota seems to have prioritized emission reductions because they provide consumers with a wide choice of emission-reducing vehicles. Toyota is taking big steps to reduce carbon emissions.

The full lineup of hybrid vehicles is already available, and hydrogen-powered vehicles are added in 2023. The upcoming production of their first electric vehicle in 2022 will launch Toyota to the top of green manufacturers. The hydrogen-powered Toyota Corolla and Prius will be released sometime in 2023.

2023 Toyota Prius Hybrid

The plug-in hybrid variant of the Prius already has a 2021 record (as of this writing), so the Prime version will definitely be back. Superior exterior design is always a good reason to shun the regular Prius for the Prius Prime, so if the entire line gets a revamped design, we wonder how Toyota will differentiate the plug-in model.

For 2022, the Prius Prime delivers 25 miles of EV range before the four-cylinder gas engine automatically kicks in. If the price of the Toyota Prius Prime 2023 can be kept under $30,000, it can continue to serve customers who tend to be environmentally friendly. I’m not ready for — or unwilling to pay for — a fully electric car.

Toyota Prius 2023 MPG

While we don’t have official EPA numbers yet, we don’t expect the hybrid numbers to change much for 2023. The base model 2022 Prius Eco hits an impressive 58/53 mpg city/highway. Other Prius models deliver a still good 54/50 mpg. Will the AWD model last into the 2023 model year? It’s not the highest-selling volume variant, but it can. If so, that model can go on to deliver around 51/47 mpg. It’s not quite as good as other Prius models, but offering AWD is a major advantage over the Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Niro hybrid hatchbacks.

While no specs are listed for the 5th generation Prius, we do know that Toyota has said it will retain the current 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and lithium-ion battery. Toyota also said it expects “major improvements” to fuel efficiency.

Toyota is a global leader in hybrid technology, so I’m sure we’ll see massive improvements on all fronts with all these enhancements.

Toyota Will Debut 5th Generation Prius In 2023

Toyota is simultaneously working on EV and hybrid. One of the reasons is the many thefts of catalytic converters. The Prius is one of the biggest targets out there. Toyota has a response to eliminate these variables by making EVs that do not have a catalytic converter.

Some of the focal points on the 5th gen Prius will leverage the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, and the Gen 5 Prius will retain what Gen 4 has to offer.

Another key point will also be the sporty exterior. The Prius is often slammed with unsightly or horrible-looking comments.

Toyota hopes to improve on that with a redefined body. The new Prius should also look more like a sedan than a hatchback-style wagon.

2023 Toyota Prius Price

We estimate the Toyota Prius 2023 will have an entry-level price of around $26,000. Toyota’s fuel-intensive hybrids are always of great value, and that goes for the next generation of Prius as well.

With the exception of the Prius Prime, the standard Prius hybrid trim will be distinguished primarily by its comfort and safety content. All-wheel drive will likely remain optional and should add around $1,500 to the price (on the trim offered).

The top-of-the-range Prius 2023 equipped with all the bells and whistles is expected to have an asking price of around $33,000.

2023 Prius Prime Range, We don’t have official specifications yet for the Toyota Prius 2023 price list, but KBB gives an estimated starting price of $26,000. That’s only about $1,000 more than the current starting price of the 2022 Prius, but it’s probably accurate.

Going out of those estimates, we can guess the prices for the rest of the models in the new Prius lineup:

  • 2023 Prius L Eco: $26,000
  • 2023 Prius LE: $27,200
  • 2023 Prius XLE: $30,200

2023 Toyota Prius Release Date

In April, Toyota announced the development of hydrogen engine technology through motorsports. The company is testing a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that uses compressed hydrogen in a racing vehicle based on the Toyota Corolla Sport.

According to a recent Best Car report, it is said that Toyota is working on the commercialization of hydrogen engine technology in 3-4 years.

2022 is likely the last model year for the fourth-generation Toyota Prius in the US market. The 2022 Toyota Prius lineup includes a new Nightshade Edition special edition model with a darker exterior.

The Prius Nightshade Edition sports headlamps, mirror caps, door handles, 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and shark fin antennae are all in black. The AWD-e-version of the Prius Nightshade Edition has smaller 15-inch alloy wheels with black wheel nuts.

Verdict

With the Prius not doing as well as it has historically, I feel this “remodel” is a very good direction for the famous hybrid. I believe that Toyota has a lot more to offer in the hybrid world, and we are now starting to feel it.

I also think that Toyota needs to significantly improve its “Prime” lineup if they are to compete in the EV market. I also believe it will help Toyota to better understand the performance side and give us some cheaper yet more powerful sports cars.
