2023 Toyota Supra is a legendary name in the automotive industry that has been around for decades. One of the biggest reasons behind this car’s success is its immense tuning potential.

The iconic name was brought back in 2020 and lives up to the legendary Supra name. While the latest-generation Supra is a great car, one of its drawbacks is the absence of a manual transmission.

The all-new Toyota Supra 2023 is revamped with a design update. Beneath Toyota’s design lies essentially an engine sourced from the BMW Z4, which has been tuned by the automaker to add a distinctly Japanese touch.

The new manual GR Supra is now much more in demand and in direct competition, especially the All-New Nissan Z, which is offered in a very similar configuration.

It’s a good time to become a Toyota fan. The GR86 has just been brilliantly overhauled, the new and very hot all-wheel-drive GR Corolla is on the horizon and the 2023 Toyota GR Supra takes on the new Nissan Z for 2023 with its own new manual transmission option.

If you asked fans a decade ago which brand would spearhead a Japanese sports car revival while staring the internal combustion edge in its face, few would have guessed Toyota. But here we are.

However, the Supra is still a Toyota with an asterisk. The chassis, engine, and transmission are all sourced from BMW, for better or for worse. Fortunately, it’s most often the former.

We have some quibbles. The manual lacks on the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, for example, but hey, at least you can now get one for the 3.0-liter inline-six. By and large, the Supra is a strong, agile, communicative driving partner who never fails to turn heads.

Three-pedal fans rejoice! The GR Supra 3.0 model is officially available with manual transmission for the 2023 model year. Apart from the transmission, all six-cylinder Supras get a rearranged suspension and steering, which should have made the car more comfortable earlier.

The traction and stability control systems have also been reset, and a new Hairpin+ driving mode was introduced for better cornering on narrow mountain roads. The four-cylinder Supra 2.0 gets some suspension and braking system tweaks carried over from the revised 3.0 version, but otherwise.

There’s also a new Stratosphere Blue color and A91-MT Edition, pictured in the interior photo below, which gets unique 19-inch alloy wheels in Frozen Gunmetal Grey, red accents throughout, a 12-speaker JBL sound system, and exclusive Cognac leather.

2023 Toyota Supra Redesign

A major change to the exterior of this vehicle is the introduction of two new color schemes called matte white and named CU Later Gray which are offered on the limited edition model. It rides on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels that have also been redesigned.

In addition to mechanical changes, the Supra also received revisions to the interior, and the most striking is the redesign of the center console. The center console has been widened to accommodate a larger manual gearbox and places the infotainment system controls in a much more ergonomic way.

The infotainment system is relatively familiar because it still uses an 8.8-inch touch screen and runs the latest generation of BMW iDrive software. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay but surprisingly lags on Android Auto. This limited edition model comes exclusively with a brown leather interior, and the gear knob has an Alcantara finish.

The digital gauge cluster has dynamic driving data and was created by Toyota. The vehicle is also equipped with the twelve-speaker JBL sound system on the limited edition model, while the lower trim gets a 10-speaker sound system as standard. There is also a head-up display, wireless phone charging, and an electronically adjustable seat with a heating function.

The reborn Toyota Supra gets even better with 2023. For the first time now, Toyota is offering a reborn Supra with a 6-speed manual and improved driving dynamics. The good news is that North America will get a limited 500 Supra in the form of the A91-MT Edition.

Since the release of the GR Corolla, we’ve been expecting something new to come. The 3-cylinder Banger brought hatchback fun to North America, giving the Volkswagen Golf R and many competitors their money.

For those who don’t know, Gazoo Racing is the epitome of Toyota’s performance. His main focus was on creating even better cars, overcoming the confines of the underrated Toyota badge. We’d like to compare it to a true AMG for Japan, except with the manual and spirit focused on the WRC.

The six-speed gearbox will only be available with the BMW B58 inline-six, which produces 382 horsepower. BMW no longer makes the B58 with a manual, so Toyota has difficulty developing a new transmission that can match the B58.

Manuals usually can’t handle that much torque. Fortunately, this is not the case with the 2023 Supra manual, as the new transmission will produce roughly the same horsepower and torque as the automatic version.

A slight change in final drive ratio – this time the manual Supra received a shorter final drive ratio of 3.46 compared to 3.14 with the automatic. This means the Supra GR 2023 with a manual will produce less torque at the wheels but a higher top speed.

The newly developed 6-speed transmission gets the Supra-Intelligent feature that comes in the form of rev-matching in up and down gearshifts. The manual transmission is programmed so that it rotates accordingly without the need for the traditional heel-toe technique.

For gearheads who want the old-fashioned way to match spins, switching to sport mode and turning off iMT programming is the way to go. The manual Supras also gets a new clutch that has less noise-canceling material, making it lighter. Shifting gears manually also makes Toyota rearrange the center console control buttons.

It features a removable top designed to fit snugly in the trunk, ultimately allowing for an open cockpit sensation that lets you hear and soak up all the beautiful notes of the upgraded inline-six.

Still don’t remember? Well, it sounds cliché now, but the biggest claim to fame from the top Targa was when Paul Walker and Vin Diesel raced the F355 Spider in their Lamborghini Orange Supra in a Bomex kit.

Yes, we know the car is pretty awful, but the bottom line is the Targa top option is a staple of the Mk4 Supra among die-hard fans and on the big screen.

2023 Toyota Grand Supra

delivers enough excitement, style, and drama to replace the brand’s quieter sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs. Developed and built alongside the BMW Z4 convertible, the Supra offers similar build qualities and interior materials that are simpler—yet still handsome—inside.

The entry-level 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder delivers ample power, but we can’t help but marvel at the optional 382-hp turbocharged 382-hp turbocharged BMW inline-six that makes this two-seater fly.

Rear-wheel drive is the only setting, and the Supra’s solid chassis and sharp steering allow it to come alive on twisty roads and racing courses.

Sure, it might borrow a little too much from the BMW dumpster for some Toyota fanboys, and its sweeping exterior design creates some really big blind spots but even so, the Supra remains one of our favorite sports cars. This is a driver’s car and a fan’s delight.

Toyota, no doubt encouraged by car-boy shouts over the Supra’s lack of manual transmission, has added a six-speed stick to the menu for the 2023 model year.

The manual will be optional with a more powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged sourced from the BMW inline-six and will become standard. on a new special edition, called the A91-MT model.

The A91-MT will be limited to just 500 units in the US and will come in matte white or matte gray paint with a two-tone brown and black interior.

Other changes to the Supra lineup for 2023 include revised tuning for the suspension and steering system and the introduction of a new driving mode called Hairpin+, which allows for additional wheelspin on one of the rear tires to help turn the Supra in very tight corners.

2023 Supra Specs

The current Supra sells with either a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 with 295 lb-ft of torque, or a 382-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 with 367 lb-ft, and as mill rumors suggest, the new transmission is only available on the latter, more powerful (and more expensive) Supra 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and the new A91-MT Limited Edition models. Special prices will be announced at a later date.

Toyota says engineers took the existing transmission, driveshaft, and gear housings, and removed some elements for weight reduction. But it comes with a new clutch with high performance and a large diameter.

The new MT is also smart, featuring performance-enhancing software that optimizes torque in upshifts, with downshifts tuned for gearshift consistency, but the EMT system can also be turned off by the driver.

Compared to the Supra’s available automatic transmission, the manual final drive ratio has been shortened from 3.15 to 3.46, to “avoid sluggish takeoff.”

Stick-shift cars get their suspension tone and reprogram the traction control system, to avoid slipping in first gear in cold conditions, as an example is given. 2023 Toyota Supra Interior

The driver-focused cockpit is tight, and although the double-bubble roof provides some additional headroom, the tallest driver will feel squeezed. Cargo space is also cramped, but the cargo area (accessed via the hatchback) is roomy enough for a few carry-on luggage or about a week’s worth of groceries for two.

In our tests, we managed to fit four carry-on luggage behind the back seat. Much of Toyota’s interior is shared with the Z4, so those familiar with BMW’s switchgear and infotainment controls will feel right at home.

Speaking of infotainment, the Supra’s main screen is an 8.8-inch unit with a very lightweight version of BMW’s latest iDrive interface. Digital gauge displays — which offer a different design compared to the Bimmer — are standard across the range.

Navigation and Apple CarPlay capabilities are both available, but Android Auto is not offered. The 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional, but we expect the standard 10-speaker audio system to be sufficient for most buyers given the size of the Supra’s interior.

2023 Toyota Supra Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Before 2023, all Supra models came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive; this year, the six-speed manual is finally an option, but only with the optional 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six.

On the test track, our long-range 2020 Supra 3.0 (with an eight-speed automatic) set some very impressive acceleration figures: hitting 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and 100 mph in 9.5 seconds.

That puts it in the big leagues against the Chevy Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman GTS, and BMW M2 Competition. It’s even faster than the vaunted fourth-generation Supra, which is powered by a sequential-turbocharged inline-six with 320 horsepower.

Despite its performance potential, the Supra’s suspension is capable enough to drive every day. The steering is accurate, well-weighted, and direct, which enhances its fun-to-drive personality. The lower-priced four-cylinder model delivered a speed of 4.7 seconds at 60 mph on our test track.

That’s faster than the Supra’s German cousin—the BMW Z4—which manages to hit a time of 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. One negative we found with our long-term Supra performance was how easy it was to get caught in the snow.

2023 Toyota Supra MPG

The most efficient Supra is the one with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which gets an EPA rating of 25 mpg city and 32 on the highway. The more powerful Supra 3.0 rating is still pretty good at 22 mpg city and 30 highway.

It’s more efficient than the Camaro, Cayman GTS, and M2. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, the six-cylinder Supra surpassed the highway ratings by producing 34 mpg; with four turbos, the Supra delivers a stellar 38 mpg.

2023 Supra Price

While there’s a bit of driving emotion lost with the four-cylinder Supra 2.0, we think the ripping acceleration from the 3.0 six-cylinder is worth the extra cost.

We’ll skip the Driver Assist package, which adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a lane-maintenance assist system that’s more distracting than useful.

Each Supra comes with a year’s membership to the National Auto Sport Association’s sports car racing sanction organization and one free day at a high-performance driving event.

And just one thing: the money you save by not purchasing the Driver Assist package can be used for additional track time and new rubber.

New Toyota Supra 2023 Get a Six-Speed Manual

Japanese outlet Creative Trend reports the GR Supra will be revealed in the guise of a six-speed manual on April 28, 2022, with production starting in July and Japanese deliveries starting in October.

The best part? The three-pedal option will reportedly come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, instead of being limited to the 2.0-liter turbo four not sold here.

That would give Toyota a direct rival to the upcoming Nissan Z, which will also come with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission.

The manual Supra will reportedly lose adaptive cruise control and reverse autonomous emergency braking.

There is precedent for manually equipped vehicles to lose certain active safety equipment and driver assistance; the Subaru BRZ manual misses out on a lot of the technology suite found in cars.

The Manual isn’t the only variant that will join the Supra lineup for 2023.

Previous reports indicated the Supra GRMN will debut in early 2023 as a limited model – just 200 units – with an updated version of the BMW Supra sourced from the turbocharged inline-six.

Best Car Web reports this will produce 385kW and 657Nm, only outperforming the twin-turbo inline-six BMW M3 and M4 Competition (375kW/650Nm) and comfortably ahead of the regular Supra (285kW/500Nm).

The GRMN Supra can reportedly use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission instead of the eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission used by the regular BMW and Supra.

It is also expected to feature a variety of weight-saving measures, including various carbon fiber components.

The Supra will face new competition from the redesigned Nissan Z-Car.

The 370Z’s replacement, dubbed the ‘Z’, is slated to arrive in mid-2022 and will use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 298kW of power and 475Nm of torque.

It is mated to the aforementioned six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic.

2023 Toyota Supra GRM

The first rumors about the GR Supra getting a very powerful top-of-the-range version are almost as old as the fifth-generation sports car itself, but so far nothing has turned out to be true.

Proved or not, the rumors are starting to heat up again, and almost all of them point to a limited edition Supra called the GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nürburgring), which will also signal the swan song model.

Take it all with a pinch of salt, but all the details make a bit of sense, though it all depends on how BMW can be convinced to lend the most powerful straight-six engine ever for this project.

As you all know, the fifth-generation Toyota Supra is the technical twin of the latest BMW Z4 G29, despite having a bespoke Toyota coupe and body design instead of a roadster like its German brethren.

Both the Z4 and Supra are built on the same production line by Magna Steyr in Austria and feature identical power generation, suspension, and infotainment systems; you name it.

The fact that the current Z4 doesn’t have an M version at the moment is prime proof that a Supra with a BMW M3/M4 engine isn’t going to happen, but apparently, that will change in the next few years too.

According to the latest rumors, the ‘bad’ BMW S58 straight-six versions of the M3 and M4 will find their way in the Z4 and special edition Toyota Supra.

Essentially a version of the high-performance twin-turbocharged B58 engine already available in the Supra 3.0, the S58’s current straight-six mill engine only powers the BMW X3 M and X4 M, and the recently launched M3 and M4. produces 480 PS (473 bhp) in the regular version and 510 PS (503 hp) and 659 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque in the Competition model.

BMW M’s chief honcho was persuaded to include twin-turbo factories in both the M Z4 G29 and Supra GRMN versions by none other than Toyota’s Tetsuya Tada, also known as the Mr 86.

The only way the business case for both models would be convincing is if they were treated not like the traditional halo models but limited production versions that could ask for more money for their exclusivity, not necessarily for their performance.

Neither the current Z4 nor the Supra is a big seller, so the super-expensive limited-edition versions of both models should only make them more desirable for both collectors and performance-seekers alike.

While the Z4 M will be launched first, the Supra GRMN will be launched towards the end of the last generation Supra powered by an internal combustion engine.

Although it has a more violent performance and a more aggressive appearance, according to Toyota, this car is not as brutal as the Toyota Supra Heritage Edition. For example, the turbo is not modified. But the dual exhaust in the center of the rear diffuser remains.

This car should indeed be sold and displayed at Toyota dealers around the world. Unfortunately, until now Toyota has not planned to produce this car.

There is no other more perfect way to hear the roar of the exhaust behind from the top of this open-topped Toyota Supra. Hopefully, Toyota will listen to input from its many fans around the world.

2023 Toyota Supra Specs

Toyota is yet to offer a fifth-generation Supra, referred to as the GR Supra, with a manual transmission. While an engine sourced from BMW under the hood can be had with a manual transmission in the German brand’s range, the Japanese manufacturer offers nothing of the sort.

Last summer, BMW canceled the Z4 in Australia after selling only two units in two years, which is a clear indication of real demand regardless of what people say on the internet.

Rumors about a manual version of the Toyota Supra have resurfaced, and this time Toyota claims to have greened the manual option.

Previous rumors on the subject claimed that only the four-cylinder Supra, which was released later than its six-cylinder sibling, would get a manual transmission as an option.

That makes sense since BMW only offers the manual in the Z4 range, which is the GR Supra platform sibling, with the sDrive20i variant.

The 194 horsepower four-cylinder motor produces 320 Nm of torque and a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) time of 6.8 seconds, which is two tenths slower than the automatic version.

The latter is also better at fuel economy, but no one buys that model with that in mind. It’s easy to understand why it doesn’t work.

This time, a source within Toyota’s US dealer network claims that the manual version of the GR Supra is “confirmed”, and “could debut this year.” These sources have contacted The Drive to share this information, along with the fact that the top brass at the Toyota company has allegedly decided to offer a manual on the six-cylinder Supra.

That version may come with a different engine, but that’s unconfirmed. Other sources claim that chief engineer Tetsuya Tada insists on a manual for the Supra, but that’s also unconfirmed at this point.

A Toyota representative has yet to comment on the rumors regarding the A90 Supra manual transmission, which many companies would do in this situation. Rumors are often left without comment, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The same company insider also claims that select Toyota dealers are holding a meeting in Las Vegas in late 2021 that includes a display of a prototype Supra with a manual transmission. That’s also unconfirmed, but the company always makes prototypes, although not all of them end up being made.

Our opinion on the rumors? Don’t hold your breath. If it happens, it happens. Otherwise, nothing will change.

According to The Drive, the information about the six-speed Supra comes from the same source that confirmed the GR Corolla manual hot hatch rumors. Supposedly, the hot Corolla was shown at a dealer product show in Vegas a few months ago. Sitting next to the Corolla is said to be a prototype six-speed Toyota Supra.

The source did not provide any other details about the Supra except that they think it will be out later this year. Possible. However, other reports support the former, saying that a manual transmission was originally planned for the base 2.0-liter model but will now be exclusive to the flagship 3.0-liter Supra.

Most people expect these welcome new changes to apply to the 2023 model year. Drive thinks this might signal the hotter new GRMN trim, the 3.0-liter S58 inline-six from the BMW M3. If that assumption is correct, chances are the hottest Toyota Supra 2023 will produce 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

Very few car manufacturers still offer manual transmissions. The numbers get smaller if you just look at sports cars. Although there are still a few left, such as the Mazda Miata, Subaru BRZ, and Honda Civic Type R. There are a few others, but not many.

The Toyota Supra getting the manual transmission right could once again trigger other automakers to do the same. If more sports cars start offering manuals, and people buy them, then maybe we have a chance not to lose the manual transmission forever.

The news about the GR Corolla also strengthens the chances of this actually happening and hopefully sticking out. The GR Corolla will bring manual transmissions back to sleeper sports cars, which could have big implications on the car enthusiast scene, which had to take a big step back to the ’90s to find a third pedal.

As we know, the auto market is changing faster and crazier than it has been since Henry Ford got involved. The market will change. The product will reflect that market.

Having said that, we don’t have to worry too much about features like the manual transmission getting lost completely. As long as there is money to make, products will exist.

2023 Toyota Supra Engine

Among the rumors circulating about a future GR Supra is one that suggests it and the platform-sharing BMW Z4 roadster could get a higher-performance powertrain than the two currently available to them.

The standard 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four base engine and the available 382-hp 3.0-liter turbo inline-six upgrade will be complemented by a version of the twin-turbo S58 engine found in the M3 sedan and M4 coupe. The inline-six is a hotter version of the six-cylinder B58 Supra and Z4 and makes a commendable 503 hp.

Further speculation saw the GR Supra add an option for a manual gearbox. Currently, the Supra is offered only with an eight-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission. If the S58 or stick shift comes along, we expect the Supra to stick with rear-wheel drive. We also think that if we got the turbo-six from the M car, it would likely be available in very limited quantities with a hefty price tag.

Another potential scenario is Toyota retiring this Supra generation after the 2023 model year. Previous Supra offerings had an average life span of just about five years, and Toyota’s 2021 sports car model is one of the brand’s lowest volume sellers, beating only the giant Land Cruiser SUV in the lineup. 2021.

We take that intimacy with a grain of salt. This generation is only four years old, and while Toyota may not be moving many GR Supra cars, Toyota has managed to sell more of them every year since the model returned in 2019. Regardless, the Nissan Z 2023 appears to be a bit cheaper than the base 2021 Toyota Supra 2.0. And it’s noticeably cheaper than the Supra 3.0.
