But if Toyota announced it was building an electric Tacoma, it would be difficult for the truck to look more like this. Sure, the style has a bit of Tundra in it, but so does the next-generation Tacoma.

Toyota has finally confirmed electrification plans for its truck lineup, and we have a hunch it will start with the Tundra.

The truck segment is gearing up for electrification at unimaginable speeds, thanks to specialist EV companies like Tesla and Rivian. Mainstream car brands are also taking part (like they have other options!), and most recently, Toyota.

The automaker confirmed that it plans to electrify its truck fleet. This is the first time the Japanese automaker has spoken about electrifying pickup trucks.

There’s no word on which truck gets the ion shot first, but either way, expect it to come sooner than expected.

Toyota has mentioned that it will have 70 electric models worldwide by 2025. Fifteen of them will be dedicated battery-electric vehicles, and seven of these 15 will come with the prefix “bZ” moniker, which stands for Beyond Zero – BZ1, BZ2, BZ2X, BZ3, BZ4, BZ4X, and BZ5. Models with the ‘X’ will come with a dual motor setup and an all-wheel drive system.

There doesn’t appear to be a pickup truck in the bZ series, which means, for now, the automaker will be focusing on electrifying its new existing range rather than building a new electric pickup from the ground up.

There’s no word on when the electric truck will arrive, but at least we’re still a few years away.

2025 Toyota Tundra Updates

Toyota is offering seven trims and a variety of new features, including massage seats, for the 2025 Tundra lineup. Variants for the full-size pickup truck are as follows: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, TRD Pro, and Capstone. There’s a new TRD Rally Package for off-roading and a host of technologies to make towing easier.

Toyota offers two engine options: a twin-turbo V6 and a twin-turbo V6 hybrid.

The standard i-Force V6 engine produces 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The i-Force Max hybrid engine produces 437 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 583 pound-feet of torque at 2,400 rpm.

Gas mileage estimates for the V6 with four-wheel drive are 17/23 mpg city/highway and 19/22 mpg for the hybrid.

The Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 1,940 pounds.

The engine is paired with a 10-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission that has uphill/downhill shift logic and towing/hauling driving modes.

2025 Toyota Tundra Hybrid

The new 2025 Toyota Tundra Hybrid model, equipped with its i-Force Max hybrid powertrain (the nonhybrid i-Force Tundra drops the “Max” suffix), is rated at 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 48 hp and 104 pound-feet over the Tundra, the most potent nonhybrid.

It’s also worth noting that the Tundra hybrid is a crew cab-only proposition with a choice of 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed lengths. If you want a smaller double cab, you’ll have to use natural gas.

The Toyota Tacoma will also be getting a new generation soon, and electrification is definitely part of its future. It remains to be seen whether the Taco will get a hybrid or all-electric powertrain (or both), but it will be one of the first midsize trucks in the US to get some electrification.

Rumor has it that the next-get Tacoma will share the platform with the Tundra, so we’ll probably see a mix of two trucks built specifically for the electric variant here.

Toyota also said it plans to introduce 15 new electric vehicles by 2025, many, if not all, of which will be featured at the same event as this EV Pickup, so electric pickup trucks could be present by then.

However, until we get closer to that date, for now, we have only the faintest promise that a Toyota electric truck is coming, along with a hazy picture of what it will look like.

So far, we have seen Toyota’s seriousness about building an EV Pickup. This is mentioned in Gearpatrol, where Toyota has officially confirmed an electric pickup is in development. This model will offer a pickup truck with a BEV powertrain, which is planned to be launched later this year.

One factor that could delay the launch could be Toyota’s battery technology. The current Toyota EV has been lame in range compared to competitors. And Toyota may need a next-generation battery to power the pickup sufficiently for towing and hauling.

2025 Toyota Tundra TRD Models

In the early 2024 model year, Toyota enthusiastically stated that it would begin providing the TRD Performance Package to Tundra customers. We believe this will be of positive value. Toyota saw an opportunity to take advantage of the new Tundra’s twin-turbocharged i-FORCE V6 engine and offer its customers something truly unique.

Greg Bernas, vice president of Toyota Parts and Accessories Development, states: In factory trim, the base i-FORCE engine produces 389 peak horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm. The TRD Performance Package increases power output to 421 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, while peak torque occurs 400 rpm earlier, producing 479 lb-ft of torque. At 2,000 rpm, it widens the torque band and significantly improves power delivery at the end of the throttle, and on the i-FORCE MAX Tundra, the kit increases horsepower from 437 to 469. 2025 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Off-Road

Toyota announced plans to launch 15 battery electric vehicles by 2025. We can expect pickups to be at the forefront of that movement.

We don’t know how far Toyota has come in electric powertrain development. Still, the exterior design looks almost production-ready—Toyota showed us a similar secret Tundra mockup months before its official debut.

Car and Driver speculate that Toyota could release more information within the following year. It’s hoping they’re right.

2025 Toyota Tundra Interior

In this latest model, the 2025 Toyota Tundra has presented updated materials that are much better than before. The basic interior is drab and has some hard plastics here and there.

Opting for the shorter cab won’t affect front-row comfort, but it reduces rear-seat legroom from 41.6 inches in the crew cab to just 33.3 inches.

Comfort

Toyota designers in Calty have used a horizontal layout theme and integrated the dashboard and center console. The center console design is uncluttered yet practical, retaining physical control for essential functions such as temperature control and volume adjustment.

The 12.3-inch complete digital instrument cluster is available in the higher trims, but the lower trim is suitable for a semi-analog instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch MID. The 10-inch heads-up display is also an optional feature.

And we hope that the 2025 Tundra will have a classier interior than ever before.

Other highlights of the cabin are the extensive 14-inch Audio Multimedia touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto compatibility, a virtual assistant that responds to Toyota’s Hey/Hi/Hello/OK wake-up phrases, and saveable profiles.

Besides being more extensive, the new center screen offers a better viewing angle for the driver because it’s not too tilted. The lower trim features an 8-inch Audio Multimedia touchscreen infotainment system instead.

The Tundra 2023’s key comfort features include a panoramic roof, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, a rear sunshade, and power sliding rear windows. The 360-degree camera system allows for easy parking of large pickups.

The third-generation Tundra has large vertical AC vents instead of small circular ones.

Unlike the second-generation Tundra, it has a thick A-pillar driver-side grip handle, which drivers will appreciate when off-road driving. Toyota has installed an A-pillar grip handle on the passenger side as well, but that’s not a new feature.

In terms of technology, the 2025 Toyota Tundra SR and SR5 get an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Still, the screen on the SR5 is available in 14 inches, with clear graphics and a larger screen that is also accompanied by a volume knob but does not have adjustment buttons and functions limited to control of the steering wheel.

The cornerstone of the Tundra hybrid’s infotainment experience is its standard 14.0-inch touchscreen. (Gas-only versions start with a smaller 8-inch screen, but all hybrids get the larger unit).

The audio system consists of a six- (extra cab) or nine-speaker (crew cab) setup, with a 12-speaker JBL premium audio system being standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is available.

2025 Toyota Tundra Engine

In this case, the 2025 Toyota Tundra offers three powertrains, all based on a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine. The engine on the base SR model is tuned to produce 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.

A third option is a 473-horsepower hybrid, which we’ll review separately. All use a 10-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly. Tundras equipped with four-wheel drive get a part-time setup instead of the full-time system offered on competing trucks.

Meanwhile, the new Hybrid V-6 twin-turbo gas model makes 389 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque, and the electric motor makes the difference. Just as importantly, full torque is available at a low 2,400 rpm, ideal for doing actual work.

The battery is a 1.87 kWh, 288-volt unit, and the system operates as a traditional hybrid with no plug-in option.

Every Tundra uses a 10-speed automatic transmission, and the hybrid unit allows drivers to drive on electric power alone at crawling speeds and even at higher speeds when descending hills, saving the gas engine when it’s needed most.

2025 Toyota Tundra MPG

In standard models from 2025, the two-wheel-drive Tundra is EPA-rated at up to 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway; All-wheel drive reduces those figures by one mpg each. However, the Tundra only returned 19 mpg on a 75 mph highway route.

The Tundra hybrid is all about power, not efficiency. True, the city’s 20-mpg estimate is better than the nonhybrid Tundra’s 18-mpg city estimate, but the hybrid’s 24-mpg highway figure only matches the standard truck’s fuel economy figures. That means offsetting the hybrid’s price premium in fuel economy could take decades.

The Tundra hybrid returned just 19 mpg on a 75-mile highway route.

In terms of towing, the 2025 Toyota Tundra can tow a maximum load of 12,000 pounds. While adequate, those ratings make it the least capable truck in the half-ton class.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Tundra hybrid model has a towing capacity of up to 11,450 pounds on the Limited trim and 11,380 pounds on the Platinum, but with rear-wheel drive and a short bed. Four-wheel drive and a long bed will bring those numbers down gradually.

2025 Toyota Tundra Trim Models

The entry-level 2025 Toyota Tundra SR comes with a 348-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine and is available in double cab or crew cab options (Double Cab and CrewMax, in Yota parlance). That’s all great, but it’s limited to a manually adjustable seat, rolls on steel wheels, costs extra for a basic Class IV trailer hitch, and can’t be optioned with advanced driver aids beyond the standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 package.
