While some rumors claim the model – which may sport the GR Corolla nameplate – will receive a high-performance petrol-electric drivetrain, an anonymous source familiar with Toyota’s plans told British magazine Autocar that electrification is not on the table.

Instead, the publication believes power will come from the same 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine as the GR Yaris (pictured) and turbocharged to around 261 horsepower.

Where following the driveline will cause it to stay in the air. One possibility is that the GR Corolla will receive a permanent all-wheel-drive system with rear bias.

Autocar added that a limited-slip differential could also be on the menu. If that’s the case, the hot hatch will land around 20 horses more than the front-wheel-drive 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI but with a drivetrain configuration aligned with the 2022 Golf R’s 315 horses.

Alternatively, Toyota could choose to leave the rear axle in the trash and funnel the full cavalry to the front wheels. In this scenario, the GR Corolla would neatly fill the gap between the GTI and the Hyundai Veloster N.

Chassis upgrades, visual adjustments, and a sportier interior will be part of the transformation as well. We expect the GR to be based on a globally available four-door hatchback, not a four-door sedan sold primarily in America.

Fans will have to be patient, though, as the GR Corolla probably won’t be seen as early as 2023.

When it lands, it will be sold alongside the Supra and the next-generation 86, which will be closely related to the second-generation Subaru BRZ launching in late 2020.

Toyota is also expected to be designing high-performance cars for its newest models that already use TNGA technology, such as the C-HR compact SUV.

2023 Toyota Corolla Specs

For Corolla, the specification data is still kept secret. It is not yet clear whether the power will be as big as the GR Yaris in Japan.
