2024 Toyota Tundra chooses evolution over revolution. It doesn’t change the big pickup status quo though it doesn’t exactly follow the domestic pickup truck blueprint.
For one thing, it’s the only full-size pickup in the half-ton segment without the optional V-8 engine.
Powered exclusively by a twin-turbocharged V-6, the base engine version comes with either 348 or 379 horsepower, depending on the model, while the more powerful hybridized variant produces 437 horsepower with 583 pound-feet of torque.
Each Tundra uses a 10-speed automatic transmission with rear or four-wheel drive. Unlike domestic pickups, there is no automatic four-wheel drive system available.
2024 Toyota Tundra Review
The Tundra comes as an extended or crew cab and offers a bed of 5.5, 6.5, or 8.1 feet depending on cabin size and trim. Its seven equipment levels cover the workplace, business, off-road and suburban needs—where stylish interiors are needed. This Texas-made truck has an optional infotainment screen measuring 14.0 inches long and wide.
The major 2022 redesign brings a new coil-spring rear suspension, which provides a comfortable ride; other trucks that use leaf springs bounce and sway more.
The 12,000 max tow capacity is impressive but not as high as what the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, or Ford F-150 offers.
Since the Tundra was just redesigned last year, Toyota has kept its full-size pickup mostly the same for 2023. What’s new this year for the SR5 trim is the SX appearance package that adds black and dark gray design elements to the Tundra’s exterior and interior trim.
The SX package includes dark gray 18-inch alloy wheels, black door handles, body trim, rear bumper centerpiece, and darker rear 4×4 badge. Interior accents were also changed to black, and the Tundra door badge was removed.
The SX package can be added to a choice of white, silver, gray, or black exterior paint.

2024 Toyota Tundra SX Lineup
The new SX pack is available exclusively on grade SR5 in 4×2 or 4×4 sizes. It is offered on a Double Cab model with a 6.5-foot bed and a CrewMax model with a 5.5-foot bed.
In all cases, it dresses up the Tundra in bold style thanks to the 18-inch Dark Gray Metallic wheels and by substituting black for the body color trim, including the outer door handles and inner rear bumper.
The Tundra door badge is removed for a minimalist look, while the 4×4 badge on the tailgate is darkened (on the applicable 4×4 model). A similar treatment can be found in the cabin, as black accents replace smoked silver for the trim.
The SX package is available in four exterior colors: White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, and, for a very striking look, Midnight Black Metallic.

The Tundra offers two impressive new powertrains: a twin-turbo V6 engine and a hybrid twin-turbo V6, with the latter being the most powerful of the two.
Both engines work together with a 10-speed Intelligent Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission (ECT). The new 10-speed features a sequential shift mode, uphill/downhill shift logic, and a TOW/HAUL driving mode.
The i-FORCE 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V6 uses a 24-valve DOHC cylinder head and Dual VVTi system to produce 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. torque.
The top dog in the Tundra line is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain available with 437 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, and 583 lb.-ft. torque at 2,400 rpm low.
However, the new powerhouse is also an efficiency expert, with EPA estimates of up to 20 MPG city/24 MPG highway/22 MPG combined fuel economy ratings, depending on model class and drivetrain.
The new i-FORCE MAX combines a twin-turbo V6 with a motor generator with a clutch located in the bell housing between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission.
The motor generator provides additional power through the transmission, while engine start-up, EV drive, electric assist, and energy regeneration are accomplished only through parallel hybrid components.
The system uses a proven and reliable 288V sealed Nickel-metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery located under the rear passenger seat.
Although the electric motor does most of the work at lower speeds, once above 18 mph, the petrol engine remains in constant operation for optimal performance in the mid and high-speed ranges.
When in TOW/HAUL mode, the i-FORCE MAX system continues to operate to provide impressive acceleration and torque for towing requirements.

2024 Toyota Tundra Features
The third generation Tundra introduces Toyota’s new Multimedia Audio system designed and engineered by Toyota’s Texas-based Connected Technologies team. The all-new Human Machine Interface (HMI) provides advanced interaction through sight, touch, and sound activation.
The new Toyota Audio Multimedia offers five times more processing power than the previous generation system.
This comprehensive system has a standard 8-inch centrally located touchscreen or a 14-inch touchscreen available with an enhanced resolution for sharp, high-quality visuals.
It also includes more responsive touch functionality that consumers are familiar with, including the pinch and zoom functions used on phones and tablets.
A favorite among the glove-wearing Tundra passengers, the new system still uses a large, easy-to-grip dial for audio volume. Toyota’s new Multimedia Audio System also offers standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto wireless compatibility.
Virtual Smart Assistant* provides an easy-to-use virtual companion that’s more powerful and personalized than ever before. Using simple wake-up phrases like “Hey/Hi/Hello/OK Toyota” makes connection easy and seamless.
VA’s intuitive and natural response allows for user audible replies, creating a human-like conversational experience.
There are two new instrumentation panels on the Tundra: an available 12.3-inch TFT panel or a combination meter that includes a 4.1-inch digital multi-information (MID) display with analog readouts.
In addition to vehicle diagnostics, the new display also provides access to safety features, navigation, audio controls, off-road features, and towing functions.
On the combination meter, the 4.1-inch MID display switches between multiple screen options that include navigation, audio selection, vehicle diagnostics, and more. Around the MID screen are analog gauges that include a tachometer, speedometer, as well as oil and fuel gauges.
Standard with the i-FORCE MAX powertrain, the 12.3-inch display lights up when the vehicle is started to display one of five rotating Tundra animations that fill the screen. The display shows digital gauges, including a tachometer and speedometer.
Selectable content includes tow gauge, pitch and roll display, and powertrain performance gauge. The screen display also changes with the driving mode and provides specific information for off-road and towing functions.
2024 Toyota Tundra Interior
Inside, the Tundra has a bold dashboard embellished with prominent air vents and a thick, smooth centerpiece that connects the door panels. The materials used in the center console, dashboard, and doors are much better than those used in the previous generation.
Of course, the quality also improves with the trim levels, with the top-of-the-line 1794 edition sporting attractive wood accents. All models have a versatile center console with plenty of storage space and a large center bin.
While a pair of analog gauges and a small driver information display are standard on the instrument panel, the top trim has a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
The Tundra comes in two body styles with three different cargo bed lengths. The extended cabin (aka Double Cab) is available with a 6.5 or 8.1-foot bed. Crew taxi.
Giant touchscreens that measure at least 12 inches are now available in almost every full-size pickup truck – except for the Nissan Titan.
While an 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard on the Tundra, it can be upgraded with a horizontally oriented 14.0-inch touchscreen that beats what’s on offer on all other trucks.
It has a handy volume button as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but there are no setup buttons and the controls on the steering wheel have limited functionality. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is also offered.
Toyota Tundra Engine
is the only full-size pickup truck not available with a V-8 engine? Instead, it was only offered with a twin-turbo V-6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This machine comes in three different potentials.
In the base SR trim, the nonhybrid engine develops 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.
Otherwise, it makes 389 horses and 479 pound-feet. On our test track, our non-hybrid Limited test truck clocked 6.1 seconds from zero to 60 mph. The hybrid version features an electric motor integrated into the transmission, which allows pure electric driving at low speeds.
This combination produces a combined 437 horses and 583 pound-feet and cuts the zero-to-60-mph time to just 5.7 seconds. Also changed from its predecessor is the rear suspension, which previously used a leaf spring arrangement.
The Tundra now uses a smoother coil spring rear suspension which improves its ride and handling characteristics. This is evident with the version we drive. Toyota continues to offer the popular TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport packages.
The first includes off-road suspension, skid plates, and unique wheels. The latter includes a lower suspension and 20-inch wheels.
Those seeking maximum off-road capability will want the TRD Pro, which features a raised suspension and exclusive dampers as well as a special set of black 18-inch alloy wheels mounted on all-terrain tires.

Towing and Payload Capacity
The Tundra is capable of towing up to 12,000 pounds, which is slightly lower than other full-size trucks. The F-150, for example, can tow up to 14,000 pounds. The Tundra also has a maximum payload capacity of 1940 pounds.
Again, some of the other half-ton pickups can carry more weight in their cargo beds, with the Ford maxing out at 3250 pounds.
Toyota Tundra MPG
With a nonhybrid powertrain, the two-wheel-drive Tundra has speeds of up to 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway; four-wheel drive reduces that figure by 1 mpg each. The hybrid model is rated at up to 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.
On our 75 mph highway route, which was part of our extensive testing regimen, the hybrid model delivered just 19 mpg. For more information on the Tundra’s fuel economy ratings, visit the EPA website.
2024 Toyota Tundra Price
has a higher starting price than its domestic competitors. However, Toyota’s entry-level SR trim has more desirable standard features, including a 379-hp twin-turbo V-6 and coil-spring rear suspension. (Coil-spring rear suspension is also standard on the Ram 1500.)
We think what you’ll get is an SR5 with a TRD Off-Road package that brings an electronically locked rear differential, unique wheels, upgraded suspension, and other extras.

The 2024 Toyota Tundra release date is likely to be at the end of Summer 2023.
