2022 Toyota 4Runner Concept: Everything We Know So Far
2022 Toyota 4Runner Concept ten years is forever for a vehicle to keep producing without a big redesign. We have been carefully expecting the Toyota 4Runner to get a reboot for a while, but it looks like this truck-based SUV will remain in the current generation until 2022.
In exchange, we get the new Trail Special Edition which will also be available in Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks. In addition to typical cosmetic enhancements, the 4Runner Trail will also incorporate some useful equipment.
Based on the entry-level SR5 model, the 4Runner Trail Special Edition will be available with two or four-wheel drive and available in our favorite Army Green and Cement colors, as well as black and white.
For the 2021 model year, only 4,000 Special Edition Trail will be made. In addition to black exterior badging, it will come with TRD off-road wheels and a sturdy Yakima LoadWarrior roof cargo basket.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Interior
On the inside, the Trail Special Edition will come with a 40-liter cooler that matches colors with the 4Runner exterior and is mounted to a sliding tray for easy access. You will also get thick mats throughout the season and brown seams on the black upholstery.
The Toyota 4Runner is a remnant from the past as the only medium body-on-frame SUV available in the US today. In a sea of soft-roading crossovers, 4Runner offers toughness that class doesn’t have.
Although the design has been more than 10 years, in addition to the new special edition model, we hope the 2022 Toyota 4Runner Concept will reach the showroom as a carryover model.
Visually, we expect the 2022 Toyota 4Runner to join the same basic design as it has been since 2010. Of course, the front and rear ends have gone through several refreshments over the years, but most of the sturdy SUV design remains.
The only important change is the new Trail Edition, which will add dark gray TRD Off-Road wheels and a Yakima LoadWarrior roof cargo basket. 4Runner Trail Edition will be available in Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black, or Super White.
Inside, we assume 2022 4Runner to continue with the basic cabin design for years. There have been several technological updates and light fixes, but the dashboard and interior design such as trucks have remained largely unchanged.
The Trail Edition mentioned above will add a 40-liter cooler and cargo tray, but the cabin will be identical to the rest of the 4Runner lineup.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Exterior
Once again we look at one of Toyota’s most loved SUVs of all time to see how quickly things change, and also how much they remain the same.
This is what we know about the time frame. I have heard enough reports among 2022 Toyota 4Runner over the past year to be 90% sure we are looking at the newly redesigned Toyota 4Runner 2022. However, like the Tundra, this schedule seems flexible and has changed (no problem, by the way).
To this day, I feel we are looking at the sixth generation of 2023 4Runner. It will be released to the public around 2022, more than likely in the second half of this year.
Look for new exterior and interior styles, along with lots of additional technology and safety. Also, one of the biggest changes in the powertrain. Currently, 2020 4Runner uses a combination of the 4.0-liter V6 engine and 5-speed automatic transmission. It produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid
I have the mindset that Toyota is trying to ensure that they succeed with this latest generation 4Runner offering. It will be worth the wait. First and foremost, we all want the quality and reliability of Toyota to continue with 4Runner.
Next, let’s look at a new powertrain that increases gas power and mileage. I would love to see what the appearance and performance of the 4Runner Hybrid look like.

What do you think? What is the ideal new powertrain for next-gen 4Runner? Are you open to considering 4Runner Hybrid? What other features would you like to see?
2022 Toyota 4Runner Engine
Under its hood, the Toyota 4Runner is likely to continue with the same 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 278 pound-foot torque. This power will go through a five-speed automatic transmission and out to the rear wheels as standard.
Four-wheel drive will be an option because of the more robust suspension on the TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road models.
4Runner is currently showing age in IIHS safety testing with a “Marginal” score in small-overlapping tests, “Bad” light ratings, and no advanced collision avoidance features to speak – even a forward collision warning. We hope this simplicity does not change into the 2022 4Runner.
Toyota 4Runner sees the addition of the new Nightshade and Trail Edition package, which adds special wheel trim, body molding, and other performance components for 2022. 4Runner is a mid-sized SUV that can accommodate 5 passengers.
Competitors include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Passport, and Ford Edge.
Rear-wheel drive is standard with a four-wheel-drive being optional. There are seven trims offered: SR5, SR5 Premium, Venture Edition, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Nightshade, and TRD Pro.
There is only one engine available: the 4.0-liter V6 which produces 270 horsepower and is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.
Available driver assistance technologies include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rearview cameras with cross-traffic warnings, adaptive roaming control, frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane maintenance assistance, blind-spot monitoring, automatic spotlight monitoring. Price has not been released.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Price and Release date
Toyota hasn’t officially announced the date of the sale for the 2022 4Runner in the US, but based on the release of previous years, we expect a late summer arrival.
Prices have also not been confirmed, but with no major changes, we anticipate the MRR 4Runner 2022 to remain close to the MSRP model of $ 36,740 to $ 50,980.
