Full-electric and hybrid powertrains continue to spread rapidly throughout the auto industry, so it’s no surprise that Toyota’s hybrid auto specialists are offering the RAV4 Hybrid and the plug-in hybrid RAV4 called the Prime. The Japanese automaker has applied the lessons learned from its Prius hybrid to enter the much trendier compact SUV class.
Based on the regular non-hybrid RAV4 (reviewed separately), the RAV4 Hybrid and Prime offer similar practicality and features with much better fuel efficiency and, in the case of the Prime, respectable electric-only driving distance.
These electric Toyota are not alone in this segment – hybrid versions of the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Mitsubishi Outlander are also available – but they are well equipped to compete for your hard-earned dollar.
2022 Toyota RAV4 Interior and Exterior
Inside, the fifth-generation RAV4’s toughness continues with its razor-sharp dashboard that includes many hard lines and cuts, large HVAC knobs, box-shaped steering wheel center, fat shifter, and more. Across several trim levels, it also gets bold contrasting accents.
The RAV4 also has plenty of room to store items, including one under the passenger side dashboard. We anticipate no changes to the interior of the RAV4 2022.
The RAV4 is currently equipped with standard fabric upholstery, 17-inch wheels, a separate folding rear seat, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These features will most likely remain the same in 2022 RAV4.
Under the hood, the RAV4 has a single engine option, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This power flows through an eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels as standard.
There are two optional all-wheel-drive systems as well. On the LE and XLE trims, optional all-wheel-drive shifts power forward and rear as needed. On the TRD Off-Road, Limited, and Adventure trim, the more advanced torque vector all-wheel-drive system shifts power from front to rear and side to side for optimal traction.
We hope that this powertrain option remains the same in the RAV4 2022.
All current Toyota RAV4 models include automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beam. Buyers can also add an optional blind-spot monitor. IIHS rates the current RAV4 as a Top Safety Pick, but this only applies to its Limited Hybrid trim, which is the only model with the required “Good” grade LED projector headlamps.
All standard RAV4 headlights are rated “Marginal”, putting them out of the Top Safety Pick competition. However, in all crash tests, the RAV4 had a “Good” rating. We hope that these ratings and features stay the same in RAV4 2022.
2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Expected to go on sale in Australia towards the end of next year or in early 2022, the fourth version of the evergreen mid-size SUV will be the first in a series of Nissans motivated e-Power hybrids, with the next generation Qashqai. 2022 Toyota RAV4 Battery
The plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime stores its electrons in an 18.1-kWh battery pack and the EPA rates the electric-only driving distance at 42 miles. In our tests, we managed to drive 32 miles on electricity alone, but that was on the highway; we expect longer driving distances in cities.
A 3.3 kWh built-in charger is standard and a 6.6 kWh charger is optional on the Prime XSE; it reduces the charging time to just 2.5 hours on a 240-volt outlet. If only a 120-volt outlet is available, estimate the charging time to be around 12 hours.
2022 Toyota RAV4 Engine
The RAV4 Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine assisted by two electric motors for a combined output of 219 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard – one electric motor drives the rear wheel and a second motor and a petrol engine drive the front – as is a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The RAV4 Hybrid is not only more efficient than the non-powered model but also faster.
This stopped time of 7.4 seconds 60-mph in our hands while the gas-only model took 8.0 seconds to do the same task. Drivers will also feel that excitement, especially around town, where the satisfying direct power delivery from the electric motor provides an extra boost when taking off from stops.
If you want better performance, the Prime model is happy to help. In our tests, the RAV4 Prime jumped up to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. Like the standard RAV4, the handling of the hybrid and Prime models is competent and the ride is comfortable, but don’t expect any cornering action here.
When compared to the gas-powered all-wheel-drive RAV4, the hybrid model is much more efficient. The EPA estimates it will achieve 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined, beating the regular RAV4 by 14 mpg, 5 mpg, and 11 mpg, respectively.
When we tested the RAV4 Hybrid on a 200-mile fuel-efficient route, it delivered 37 mpg, 1 mpg lower than its EPA rating. Prime earned a combined EPA rating of 94 MPGe and delivered 73 MPGe during our road fuel economy tests.
2022 Toyota RAV4 Price and Release Date
If you qualify for a $ 7500 electric vehicle tax credit, the RAV4 Prime is nothing to think about, as government financial incentives lower its price substantially – and you get a RAV4 with more power and a significant electric dedicated driving distance.
Of the two Prime models, the XSE is packed with more standard features, including 19-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, and an infotainment system with a larger 9.0-inch screen. If you don’t qualify for the tax credit, we’d recommend the XLE Hybrid, which offers more standard equipment than the basic LE without experiencing much of a price increase.
XLE buyers will enjoy conveniences such as passive keyless entry, power-adjustable driver’s seat, auto high-beam LED projector headlamps, heated exterior mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, and front fog lamps.
The Toyota RAV4 2022 does not have an official release date, but we are expecting a summer sale date of 2021 based on the previous release schedule.
RAV4 2022 price is also not available. With no major changes in workmanship, we expect the MSRP to stay close to the current model priced at $ 27,225 to $ 37,155 (including destination costs).
