New Toyota Camry Engine

Previously a Toyota Camry with a standard four-cylinder engine was paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic, but acceleration figures were disappointing. The underpowered version of that engine runs on a battery and two electric motors to power the Camry hybrid, which is no more exciting to drive than the base powertrain.

The real gem of this lineup is the soft 301-hp V-6 available on the XLE and XSE models as well as the TRD variant. We’re also happy to say that we no longer hate driving Camrys. It has a controlled ride and a very responsive handling.

The steering wheel is comfortable in weight and feels solid when cornering and light when maneuvering in the parking lot. We found the Camry’s brake pedal response not too soft, even in the hybrid, where it had to combine friction with regenerative braking.

In the 2025 engine section of this latest generation Toyota Camry we expect a new 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing around 198kW of power and 420Nm of torque which is upgraded more recently than before.

The entire Camry lineup performed very well in EPA testing, and the four-cylinder model performed brilliantly in our real-world road tests. The most efficient nonhybrid Camry models are the LE and SE with four-cylinder engines, which earn EPA estimates of 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway; the base LE hybrid scores 51 mpg city and 53 mpg highway ratings.

The hybrid top trim sacrifices some efficiency at the altar of luxury, however, and the V-6-powered model gets a city rating of 22 mpg and a highway rating of up to 33 mpg. The four-cylinder Camry SE delivered 45 mpg in our road test, beating its own EPA rating of 6 mpg—and making it the most economical non-hybrid we’ve tested.
