2022 Toyota Supra Hard to believe we are already in mid-2021 Only 600 units, North American market only. But it also means that 2022 model year vehicles are on the way, and Toyota is kicking things off with a new announcement.
For those of you performance car enthusiasts, information about the new Toyota 86 is out. However, we expect bigger news to come from its big brother, the 2022 Toyota Supra. This is especially relevant if you live in North America. Okay, treat your eyes to the latest Supra A91-CF Edition, and you can probably guess what “CF” stands for.
For those who don’t know, the new car is officially named the Toyota Supra A91 Carbon Fiber Special Edition 2022. It’s too long, so we’ll stick with the CF moniker. The formula is simple. Start with the Supra 3.0 2022, and add exposed carbon fiber to the front splitter, side rocker panels, side, and rear canards.
After that, make the spoiler a little taller with a carbon fiber duckbill. Pair the exclusive 19-inch matte black wheels, give the interior a red/black tint with more carbon fiber trim, and you’ve got the A91-CF Edition.
All of which certainly enhance the appearance of the Supra. However, Toyota says that the add-on is also functional. Carbon fiber vents and duckbill wings add downforce and stability to help the CF-Edition beat the race track.
Our personal experience with the Supra does reveal an engine that comes to life when pushed hard. So a little aerodynamic assistance shouldn’t be a bad thing.
However, this is something that only a very select group of buyers will experience. Toyota plans to produce 600 units of the CF Edition only, and they will be sold exclusively in North America.
If you can’t get your hands on the CF Edition, Toyota says all Supra 3.0 models will come with heated seats as standard equipment. Red is also a new interior option in version 3.0, and all Supras equipped with a premium audio setup will have full-screen Apple CarPlay functionality.
Something available on all Supra models – from standard 2.0 to 3.0 premium – is a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). That way, in theory, you can hone your driving skills in a trusted environment.
2022 Toyota Supra Preview
The Toyota Supra enters the 2022 model year with a new special edition developed exclusively for North America.
Called the Supra A91-CF Edition, codenamed the car’s A91 and the new carbon fiber add-on, only 600 were destined to be built, all with the Supra’s top-notch 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6. The engine produces 382 hp, or enough to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
New elements to the car include a fully functional aero kit made of carbon fiber. The kit includes a front splitter, chunky side skirts, a duck spoiler, and large canards at the front and rear. Toyota says the kit improves downforce and overall stability, both at road speed and track speed.
The car also stands out with its 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in matte black, plus red brake calipers contrasting the Supra logo. The red and black theme continues on the inside through a mix of Alcantara and leather trim, and owners will also find carbon fiber dashboard accents, sports pedals, and 14-way power-adjustable seats.
Only three color options are offered: Phantom matte gray, Absolute Zero White, and Nitro Yellow.
Changes to the full 2022 Supra lineup include standard heated seats for models equipped with the inline-6 (a 255-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine continues to be offered as standard), and a red interior option for models equipped with the inline. -6 and booked in Premium class. Models with premium audio systems also receive full-screen Apple CarPlay compatibility.
The 2022 Supra will hit dealers this fall. Prices will be announced closer to that date.
2022 Toyota Supra A91
Just when you thought that the limited-run 2021 Toyota GR Supra A91 couldn’t get any cooler, Toyota got to work on upgrading a special edition model for the 2022 model year. Toyota is now christening the GR Supra A91 Carbon Fiber Edition (also called the A91-CF) model. The name reflects the materials featured in the A91’s revamped body kit and upgraded interior.
For starters, the GR Supra A91-CF has larger canards and features a functional aero kit that increases downforce and stability at speed. Predictably, this model features its fair share of carbon fiber bits, and the material is in the front splitter, front and rear canards, rocker panels, and a duckbill spoiler.
A set of 19-inch matte-black alloy wheels and three available paint colors (Matte Gray Phantom, Absolute Zero White, or Nitro Yellow) complete the exterior update.
Powering the A91-CF is the Supra available 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 producing 382 hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota claims the combination allows the A91-CF to hit the one-mile-per-minute mark in 3.9 seconds. The mechanically similar GR Supra took 4.0 seconds to hit 60 mph in our tests.
Inside, Toyota pairs the A91-CF with red-black Alcantara and leather upholstery, red stitching, and carbon-fiber trim accents. Other interior touches include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and sport pedals.
Additional updates across the Supra lineup for 2022 include the addition of standard heated seats for the six-cylinder model and a new red interior color option for the 3.0 Premium trim. Additionally, the available Safety & Technology package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, wireless Apple CarPlay, an in-dash navigation system, and more to the four- or six-cylinder Supra GR.
Meanwhile, the Supra A91-CF and 3.0 Premium offer a Driver Assistance package that brings the previous pack’s adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors to these high-end models.
The 2022 Toyota GR Supra A91 Carbon Fiber Edition is exclusive to North America and Toyota plans to limit production to a total of 600 units. Buyers of the A91-CF will also receive a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association. Look for the low-volume GR Supra A91-CF to hit showrooms this fall, with Toyota set to reveal pricing closer to the model’s sales date.
2022 Toyota Supra News
This special edition Supra will be limited to 600 units, with exposed carbon fiber and unique 19-inch alloy wheels.
- The 2022 Supra lineup includes the special edition A91-CF, limited to just 600 units.
- The A91-CF features carbon fiber webbing on the front splitter, side rockers, ducktail rear spoiler, and aerodynamic canards. It will also have model-specific 19-inch matte black wheels.
- All 2022 Supras will come with a one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association.
The Supra family will be added by one for the 2022 model year. Toyota has announced the Supra A91-CF edition, a limited-run model with lots of carbon fiber trim, model-specific 19-inch matte black wheels, and a red Brembo brake package. There will only be 600 A91-CF Supra, and they will only be available in North America.
The A91-CF will share most of its characteristics with the non-special edition six-cylinder Supra, which enters the 2022 model year essentially unchanged after receiving several powertrain adjustments for the 2021 model year that increase power to 382 hp. The Supra 3.0 Premium trim has a red interior that was only available this year, plus standard heated seats.
The new special edition will be available in three exterior color options: Absolute Zero (white), Nitro Yellow, and Phantom Matte Grey. The A91-CF will come in two-tone leather and an Alcantara interior in red and black. It will also have 19-inch matte black wheels and red Brembo brake calipers peeking through the spokes. The CF in the name refers to the woven carbon fiber seen on the front splitter, side rockers, side, and rear canards, as well as the duckbill rear spoiler.
In addition to the 382-hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, the A91-CF will have the same eight-speed automatic transmission (sourced from the ZF) as the other Supra, plus the available adaptive suspension and a limited-slip differential. Both the suspension and rear differential benefit from last year’s programming update.
The Supra is currently available in GR form, which, depending on the market, is powered by either a 145kW / 320Nm or 190kW / 400Nm 2.0-liter turbo-petrol four-cylinder, or a 250kW / 500Nm or 285kW / 500Nm 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder unit.
Still, GRMN will top all four GR variants with the 309kW version of the 3.0-liter in-line turbo-petrol six-cylinder engine, according to Best Car Web. The Japanese publication also claims the GRMN will stand out from the GR crowd with an upgraded body featuring increased rigidity and reduced weight.
While Best Car Web says GRMN is “definitely coming out”, so far it hasn’t made time for a new variant.
However, Toyota Supra chief product specialist Tetsuya Tada told us last September that the reborn sports car will receive an annual increase, referring to the GRMN disclosure in the first half of next year.
Either way, the Japanese publication asked Supra fans to “expect a lot” from GRMN, even as far as suggesting it might be possible to get a manual transmission option over the standard automatic sports car reborn.
By the time February 2020 arrives, we learn that the Toyota Supra 2021 will be even better than 2020, giving some buyers an axle. Shortly after the news broke out, Toyota was trying to justify this move and explain how they want to improve the Supra year after year.
Whether current owners are feeling depressed or not, the Supra 2021 is better, but there is still one big thing it lacks – a manual transmission. That single problem, however, could be resolved any time soon if the new report from Japan’s Mag X turns out to be valid.
The downside to this news is that there’s no official word at all, and Mag X doesn’t suggest a timeline for when the manual transmission will appear on the options sheet.
With the Supra 2021 on sale soon and full details already published, we probably won’t see a Supra with factory manuals until at least early to mid-2021 when Toyota announces the 2022 model year and all the changes to come. with that. This, of course, is not the only news coming out of Japan.

Just a few weeks ago we told you that a very limited Supra GRMN appears to be in the works, but now we know a lot more about it. Until now, GRMN will utilize the M3 and M4 twin-turbo inline-six engines. If that’s the case, we’re talking about a 510 horsepower increase if BMW is willing to let Toyota use the Competition version engine.
The problem is that BMW isn’t particularly interested in letting Toyota own the engine, which is why travel will be so limited. Other rumors suggest that Toyota may be taking a completely different path.
That route will include a turbocharged inline six-cylinder that’s good for 395 horsepower, a pretty big bump from the current 335 pony Supra. To compensate for things a little and make that strong enough, GRMN is reportedly going to lose a decent amount of weight thanks to the increased use of carbon fiber.
The only downside here is that Supra’s Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada said that extra power and manual transmission are both priorities, but his team can only work one by one. That means we probably won’t see a GRMN with a manual transmission, and if we do, it will come later than expected.
2022 Toyota Supra Specs
It’s that time of year again: Super time! The changes for the 2022 Toyota GR Supra dropped today, and the headliner is a new special edition called the A91-Carbon Fiber Edition. It’s dubbed the somewhat forgettable A91-CF Edition, and it’s exactly what you’d expect from something with carbon fiber in its name.
The A91-CF Edition adds a new carbon fiber front splitter, larger canards, carbon fiber side rockers, carbon fiber duck spoiler, and lower rear canards. Toyota says the extra aero bits combine to increase downforce and stability both on the road and on the track, so it’s not all that visible. It also comes with unique 19-inch wheels that are painted in matte black. Exterior paint options include Phantom (also matte), Zero White, and Nitro Yellow.
An exclusive two-tone red and black interior is on all A91-CF Editions and makes extensive use of leather and Alcantara. Toyota says it will only make 600 Supras of this special edition, and while pricing isn’t available yet, we know they will arrive at dealerships this fall.
As for the rest of the 2022 Supra lineup, the changes are minimal compared to the radical changes we’re seeing for 2021. All 3.0 models get standard heated seats, and there’s a new all-red interior option for the Premium 3.0. All models that have a “premium audio” option are tacked on to full-screen Apple CarPlay — it cuts off the previous portion of the screen. Android users are still out of luck because even though BMW offers Android Auto on its vehicles now, the Supra still doesn’t have it.
Finally, every 2022 GR Supra owner will get a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association. It’s only $45/year for NASA membership, but Toyota says the deal also includes one free High-Performance Driving Event (HPDE), which lets you attend a one-day high-performance driving school on a road course.
Toyota Supra 2022 Interior
The driver-focused cockpit is tight, and although the dual bubble roof provides additional headroom, the tallest driver will feel pinched. Cargo space is just as tight, but the cargo area (accessed via the hatchback) should be wide enough for a few duffle bags, a week’s worth of groceries for two, and maybe even a set of golf clubs depending on the size of the bag.
In our tests, we managed to fit four carry-on cases behind the rear seats. Much of Toyota’s interior is shared with the Z4, so those familiar with BMW switchgear and infotainment controls will feel right at home.
Speaking of infotainment, the Supra’s central display is an 8.8-inch unit with a very lightweight version of BMW’s latest iDrive interface. Digital gauge screens – which are another built-in part of BMW parts storage – are standard across the entire lineup.
Navigation and Apple CarPlay capabilities are both available, but Android Auto isn’t offered. The 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional, but we hope the standard 10-speaker audio system will suffice for most buyers given the interior size of the Supra.

Toyota Supra 2022 Engine
All Supra models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and are only offered with rear-wheel drive. On the test track, our long-term Supra 2020 set some really impressive acceleration figures: zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and zero to 100 mph in 9.5. That puts him in the big league against the Chevy Camaro, Porsche Cayman GTS, and the BMW M2 Competition.
In fact, it’s even faster than the proud fourth-generation Supra powered by a six-cylinder sequential line with 320 horsepower. It’s a shame the manual transmission isn’t available, but the hope isn’t completely lost; It is rumored that Supra will get the stick at a later date in the production process.
Despite its potential performance, the Supra’s suspension is forgiving enough to ride daily. The steering is accurate, well-weighted, and direct, which enhances the personality which is fun to drive. The lower-priced four-cylinder model is new for 2021, but we haven’t had the chance to test it yet.
With the turbo-four under the hood, the Supra’s cousin from Germany – the BMW Z4 – managed to go a fast 5.0 seconds from zero to 60 mph.
2022 Toyota Supra MPG
Now with more horsepower, the fuel-economy ratings for Supra 3.0 2021 took a bit of a hit but are still good, delivering 30 mpg highway, 22 mpg city, and 25 mpg combined. It is more efficient than Camaro, Cayman GTS, and M2. On our 200-mile road fuel-economy test route, the six-cylinder Supra topped road ratings by producing 34 mpg.
The EPA hasn’t released estimates for the new four-cylinder model and we haven’t tested that powertrain either.
2022 Toyota Supra 3.0 Premium
Toyota Supra 2022 The 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter engines of the GR Supra feature a unique paint-back exhaust tuned to match their specific performance characteristics.
2022 Toyota Supra Colors
2022 Toyota Supra Manual The new special edition will be available in three exterior color options: Absolute Zero (white), Nitro Yellow, and Phantom Matte Gray. The A91-CF will come in two-tone leather and an Alcantara interior in red and black.
2022 Toyota Supra Configurations
2022 Toyota Supra Manual, Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a manual transmission: however, there are rumors circulating that later on, the line will feature a manual variant. The Supra’s chassis is soft enough for everyday use, given its performance capabilities.
2022 Toyota Supra Horsepower
Toyota is expected to offer two engines with the 2022 Supra. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower. There is a more powerful 3.0 – liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 382 hp. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
2022 Supra Release Date
Toyota hasn’t announced the pricing of its special new Supra yet, but we expect it to be around $58,000. To help ease the blow, Toyota will grant everyone who purchases the 2022 Supra a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association, which entitles its holder to a one-day performance driving event with guidance from an expert instructor. Look for the new Supra—and all its amenities—for sale at dealerships this fall.
Toyota Supra 2022 Price
While there’s a bit of driving emotion missing with the new four-cylinder Supra 2.0, we can’t talk about its value proposition as a price tag hasn’t been released yet. We estimate that the six inline will be worth the cost of the upgrade.
We’ll skip the Driver Assistance package; it adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-centered assistance that’s more distracting than useful. By purchasing a Supra, you get a one-year membership in the National Auto Sport Association and one free day at high-performance driving events.
Money saved by not choosing the Driver’s Assist package will be used wisely for additional track time and spare tires.
